Publicist Katie Sturino knew it the moment she saw Toast’s toothless grin and curly red hair: this Cavalier King Charles Spaniel rescue was destined for greatness. You might think playing Kris Jenner (a.k.a. “momager”) to her family of three adorable pups (Toast, Muppets, and Underpants) would keep her busy enough, but Sturino also models, runs her own blog, and just launched a new line of beauty products. As a size 12, 14, or 16 “living in a size 2 world,” her favorite job is championing the mission that great style can look chic at any size. Get the scoop on what Sturino’s been dreaming about lately.
What’s keeping you up at night right now?
Katie: Business. I think about my work.
What do you wear to sleep?
Katie: I like to look nice at night. No sweats. I have a bunch of Beverly Hills Hotel pajamas and little nighties.
Go-to late night snack?
Katie: Ice cream. Right now I’m doing Big Gay ice cream.
Last thing you do before going to sleep?
Katie: If I’m sleeping alone, I turn something on my iPad like Curb Your Enthusiasm or an easy light show. I should probably just get a TV in my room.
Honestly, I’m a day toothbrusher. That’s something that’s hard to admit but I do not brush my teeth before bed. You can probably find a lot of doctors who say that’s not okay.
First thing you do when you get out of bed?
Katie: Go to the bathroom. I think that’s what most people do, right? You pee and then you wake up. Then I go around the apartment to see if the dogs had any accidents that night, check the pee pads, and see if anyone was successful. [My morning routine] is very urine focused.
What makes you want to get out of bed?
Katie: Work. I have a pretty solid morning routine: I wake up, check for that urine, take the dogs out, get coffee, come back, meditate, and start.
How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
Katie: I generally sleep about the same amount every night which is maybe 5 or 6 hours and I’m probably tired a lot because I don’t sleep enough.
Last dream you remember?
Katie: I have a lot of dreams where I’m being chased or murdered and I think that that means something.
What else do you do in your bed besides sleep?
Katie: Talk on the phone, gossip – so much gossiping in my bed. I wish I had a corded phone so I could gossip even harder.
Why is running the 12ish style and your new line of beauty products, Megababe, important to you?
Katie: It’s very important to me because I am able to, in a small way, help influence women to feel better about themselves. There are many more people, products, and media working to make women feel bad and I get to feel like I’m on the right side of that.
Favorite life hack?
Katie: I make eggs in the microwave for breakfast because I hate cleaning up pans for a single egg.
What’s your relationship with your electronics? Do they sleep with you?
Katie: Ugh. They do sleep with me. [They’re the] last thing I see before bed and first thing I see when I wake up. I hate it. But my phone does help me wake up more than just being my alarm because once I start to read emails or check Instagram, neurons are getting pinged and I’m not tired. [Some] people want to snooze and lay in bed for a while and I never do.
What’s your relationship with sleep?
Katie: You have to do it, but it’s kind of a snooze. There’s so much going on! I just sleep to function.
How do you deal with stress?
Katie: Meditation has helped me a lot, but spending time with people that I like is a great stress relief for me. Also walking the dogs helps, because I have to walk them all the time.
What does failing mean to you?
Katie: Failing means not trying. If I try and I fail, it’s fine but if I don’t show up or I mess it up, then that’s on me.
What city do you sleep in?
Katie: I sleep in New York, New York.
